The colosseum was an amazing feat of enginering. It had a neat series of underground passages and trap doors to transport animals and gladiators to the arena. The floor had sand on but underneath there was a water proof layer of wood. The colosseum sometimes flooded and the arena got filled with water. They used to stage sea battles on the water. The rain also cleaned the sand from spilt blood. They had hundreds of tall poles rising off the top of the amphetheatre and a gigantic awning could be hung from them to give shade to the spectators.
