Roman laws
The main roman laws where put on the 'twelve tables' which is like the law book today. They are stone tablets with the laws engraved on them. Here is a rough translation of some of the laws:
TABLE I
If the man or woman summoned before the law does not turn up to the hearing, the witnesses can go and seize the criminal by force. If he runs away at the hearing you can 'lay a hand on him'. (e.g beat him up so he can't run away.)
TABLE II
He whose witness has failed to appear may summon him by loud calls before his house every third day.
TABLE III
If someone steals your familys food then you cut the culprits body into the amount of people in your family.
TABLE IV
If your child is very deformed then it will be killed quickily. If you sell your son 3 times then your son is freed from you.
TABLE V
Females should remain in guardianship even when they have attained their majority.
Some of the grizzily punishments that some criminals had to face where:
Crucifiction---where you where nailed to a cross and left to die of starvation or sufication.
Beheading---your head was chopped off. You where sometimes given the option of suicide.
Tarpeian Rock---you where hurled of a high cliff and onto sharp rocks or knocked out and hurled into the sea.
Punishment for parricide--- The criminal was whipped until he bled, Tied into a sack with a viper, dog, ape and a rooster for good measure.
If you where a slave the punishments where: The male slaves were beaten, tortured, and sometimes killed by cutting into
pieces by sharp weapons. They were also thrown alive before carnivorous wild animals as their prey. Sometimes they were thrown into frying pans having hot boiling oil poored over them and kept on big ovens. The female slaves were made naked and flogged with leather whips having iron nails or sharp bone pieces bound to them.
